The central towns of Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas, Phoenix and Beau Bassin offer the widest choice of family houses on generous plots, close to schools and the metro line. Goodlands, Flacq and Mahébourg give better value away from the tourist belt. On the coast, Grand Baie, Tamarin and Black River carry a premium for sea views and proximity to the beach.
What to check before you buy
Ask the owner for the title deed, the plot size, the built area, and whether any extension has a building permit. Check for a water tank, a generator or backup, and how the property drains in heavy rain. A Mauritian notary will run the title search as part of the transfer.
